So after they had settled there they began migrating again. And once they arrived at the coast, they would turn back around. Some people here were called the Ngoni, and they migrated as far as Malawi. Most of them are still living in Malawi, although some of them returned back here again.
Those who went to South Africa arrived at the coast, and then turned back around. When they returned, they started attacking those who lived here. So they were called the Ndebele, or Madzviti. They returned fighting, since they wanted to take good land for themselves. So when they returned, they were called the Madzviti. They are Murenga’s descendants, because the true Ndebele person’s totem is the bird. So anyone whose totem is Nyoni is a true Ndebele. They are the Mahungwe.
But the name Madzviti is not a good thing to call the Ndebele. It is terrible. It refers to someone who is unclothed, who is simply naked. When they came back, they were unclothed. The only thing they wore – it is embarrassing to talk about. They just walked about, unclothed. That is why they were called the Madzviti. Madzviti, meaning “unclothed.”
Even Banda, who used to rule Malawi, came from here. Those people’s totem is the lion The Ndebele say Sibanda, and we say Shumba. So he came from here. Because those who had migrated here would return once more in the direction they had come from.
What happened is that every person seeks somewhere to settle with his family. So much so that I believe with all the multitudes of families here, some eventually ended up in Britain. Some went to Germany, some went to America. And others stayed here looking for good places to live, saying, “If I stay here with my family, then I will rule over this entire territory.” That is what happened.
