Sekuru Chigamba prepares to record makwa handclapping for the mbira song “Shumba.” Made during his visit to the University of Rochester to workshop Sekuru’s Stories in 2014, this recording features Sekuru Chigamba’s mbira students Tony Perman, Stefan Fiol, Jennifer Kyker, John Green, and Austin Richey. In this piece Sekuru Chigamba begins by articulating the main pulse of the music before moving into more complex and improvisatory makwa patterns.
